Amarante (20 minutes away)
The village of Amarante has always been linked to the Tâmega River and the Marão and Aboboreira Mounts, this is, to nature. This is the reason why this region is pretty well-known as an adventure and nature destination where many open-air and physical activities are held. In this area are found some extraordinary megalithic examples from the country’s Palaeolithic heritage.
Besides, the old town of the village has some outstanding buildings and monuments such as the churches of S. Pedro and S. Domingos, the Solar dos Magalhães and Casa da Cerca. However, the most important building within the area is the Monastério de S. Gonçalo, built in 1540 by King D. João III. Inside this convent there is a museum in honor to Amadeo de Souza Cardoso, an important Portuguese painter.
