Braga is one of the most ancient cities of the country: with over 2000 years of history it has one of the oldest Sacred Mounts within the whole Europe: Bom Jesus do Monte Sanctuary. This Sacred Mount is the flagship of the northern region of Portugal.
The Sé Catedral is also the oldest of the country, since the first kings of Portugal (D. Henrique and D. Teresa) ordered its construction in the 12th century and were buried in two tombs found inside the building. Nowadays, Braga is still one of the main religious points in the country. In this sense, the feasts of Easter and St. James are the tipping points of the touristic and liturgical calendar of the city.
The Roman heritage is another tourist attraction of Braga, frequently known as the Portuguese Rome, since the city was built from the Roman city of Bracara Augusta.
